As someone who has devoted his life to creativity and half of his life to the design industry I believe there are too many boxes being formed… and I for one do not like to be popped in a box, and I especially don’t like being told what my next box is ‘supposed’ to be!

This course is for the people who live in the real design world, creating for real, everyday clients! Anyone who has been in this game long enough will understand the importance of realism, understanding their place in the market and positioning ourselves for our version of success.

Most design clients do not have $100K to spend on executing their new brand identity, a huge percentage of clients don’t have $30k to spend on brand strategy! But, there are a good chunk of clients willing to invest fantastic money into a designer that creates with intent, executes with skill, and understands that the foundations of success are in the ability to connect with an audience.


We are all different! We all have a different set of circumstances and are at different stages of our own design journeys. What I have embraced over my career is my differences! there is not ‘one size shoe fits all’ for any scenario, but there is some foundational knowledge that can help us catalyse our own creativity! Course Introduction

In this opening module we will lay the foundations for your success and James will be sharing how he laid his own. You’ll get personal insights into building your own self worth, how to stay inspired to keep pushing everyday and what to do to make sure you have time to build your own empire… rather than just helping your clients build theirs.


So WTF Is Brand Identity?

Intentionality is key. Here you’ll get a breakdown of the key areas of building a brand’s identity, why an understanding of these areas is essential to igniting your creativity, and how a deeper knowledge of its role can make us more efficient, valuable, and effective. Brands are nothing without an audience… and James will show you how this process brings clarity to your ideas, your clients, and their target market.


The Brand Story

In this module we will learn the importance of our clients story, how it can help them connect emotionally with their audience, how it can help to position themselves differently from their competitors, and ultimately how their unique journey can drive business and build a community that supports the brand.


The Brand Personality

It’s now time to unfold the power of communication and how the brand’s personality is integral to this process. Just like people, we magnetize to brands that exude personality traits that we admire and see in ourselves. When we start treating brands like humans, and give them personalities to boot… it’s clear to see the importance of focus in this area, especially when it is the dictator for our creative thinking.


The Brand Name

From a marketing standpoint, the brand name is something that maybe ‘tops the list’ when it comes to how people identify with a brand. In this module we will explore how a brand name can create conversation, how you can help your clients think of one, and what to do if your clients name is so bad, it hurts.


The Services / Products

The products / services of a brand are key factors in defining a target audience. When we know what our clients do, and how their brand helps people, we can help position them in a place of visual power. Knowing where we play, who we a playing with, why they buy, and how they buy, we can help our clients engage effectively.


The Verbal Identity (Tone / Voice / Style)

Learn how to bring a brand to life through words. Without words you are just pictures and when it comes to content creation on social media and websites… words matter. The best way to build a brand is to communicate, and in this module you’ll learn how to establish some rules for how to verbally interact with consistent, focused messaging ,and do so in a way that builds trust.


The Visual Identity

Now you’ve have learned all the important elements about our client, you can start to think about bringing it to life through a visual identity. Developing logos, choosing colors, and building a design system will help your clients communicate with their audience across all touch points and allow them to be consistent with their brand’s visual execution. In this module you will learn what factors guarantee the success of a visual identity and how the story, personality, and audience drive its success.


Why All This Matters

In this little wrap up module you will clarify the importance of understanding these six key areas of brand identity: how they can create clarity in our goals and objectives, how the information helps us to design with purpose, and how being intentional sets us, and our work, apart from the crowd.


How To Gather All This Information

Let James guide you on facilitating an exciting and adventurous client workshop. He’ll walk you through the process of gathering all the relevant information and how you find the truth about your clients’ brands. This is key to your creativity and it’s what takes you from order taker to adventure guide.


The MBJ Process For Building Brand Identities

James walks you through his entire client journey, with a focus on the three stages of his client activation process. Every fire needs fuel and he’ll talk you though the process of how he Gathers, Whittles, and Ignites his ideas into colossal conversation pieces that connect clients to their audience.


Real World Case Study

This case study shows how the MBJ process was used within a real world client. James breaks down the information he gathered, how he chose what to lean into for this client, and how this was then ignited into a cohesive visual identity that packs a punch, is full of personality, and positions his client perfectly to their audience.


Your Portfolio Piece

This is perhaps the first course of its kind where you get to immediately work with a real world client, test out all your new knowledge, and add the perfect piece to your portfolio. Timmy is James’ videographer, and needs help with his visual identity, and you are the people to help him! James will interview Timmy, and your task is to design his brand identity- submit your work for a limited time to for a chance to win a year-long mentorship with Made by James.
